Licorice Root (Liquiritiae radix)
- for cattarrhs of the upper respiratory tract and gastric/ duodenal ulcers (GCE)
- accelerated healing in gastric ulcers (GCE)
- secretolytic and expectorant effects confirmed in rabbits (GCE)
- in isolated rabbit illeum, antispasmodic action observed at concentrations of 1:2500 - 1:5000 (GCE)
Do not use for more than 4-6 weeks without medical advice (GCE)
Interactions with other drugs: Potassium loss due to actions of other drugs can be increased, increasing sensitivity to digitalis glycosides (GCE)
Contraindications: Cholestatic liver disorders, liver cirrhosis, hypertonia, hypokalemia, severe kidney insuffiiency, pregnancy. (GCE)
Side Effects: "On prolonged use and with higher doses, mineralocoticoid effects may occur in the form of sodium and water retention and potassium loss, accompanied by hypertnsion, edema, and hypokalemia, and, in rare cases, myogolbinuria.
